Description

A murder takes place at the Little Theatre in Lulverton, where Mrs Mudge is cleaning. The victim was found stabbed with a dagger from the society's latest play, Measure for Measure. The story is told in two parts. In the first section, the narrator describes how a small amateur theatre group came together in a sleepy village on the South Coast before the Second World War. However, after the murder is revealed and Inspector Charlton is called to investigate, it becomes clear that several people had motives for the crime. As the police try to untangle the complex relationships between the suspects, they must also uncover the truth behind the murder. The novel was first published in 1941 and is part of a series by author Clifford Witting, who drew inspiration from his own experience with a real-life production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.
