Description
Karel Hynek Macha's epic masterpiece, May, is a tale of seduction, revenge, and patricide, set against the backdrop of nature's beauty. Published in 1836, just seven months before the poet's death, it has ensured its lasting popularity through innovative language and poetic mastery. This new translation by Marcela Sulak brings Macha's work to an English-speaking audience for the first time, alongside a series of illustrations by Jindřich Styrský specifically created for the poem. The original Czech text is also included in parallel, providing a unique insight into the poet's innovative use of language and style. A significant omission from English translation until now, May is a key work in the history of 19th-century European poetry, and its publication offers readers a chance to experience one of the greatest Czech Romantic poets.
