Description
The role of music in Marian devotion was a powerful force in 16th-century Milan. During a time of great hardship and mortality, the people turned to veneration of the Virgin Mary and the creation of evangelical groups in her name. By 1594, these diverse lay religious organizations reflected the varied expressions of Marian devotion across the Italian peninsula. Using archival documents, meditation and music books, and iconographical sources, Christine Getz examines the significance of music within these cults and confraternities. She reveals how private music making, particularly among women, played a crucial role in propagating the Catholic Church's ideals of femininity and motherhood. Getz sheds new light on the ways in which music was used to evangelize outside the confines of court and cathedral through its most popular saint. This study provides valuable insights into the complex relationships between music, religion, and culture during this period.
