Description

Mary I: A Fresh Perspective on England's Catholic Queen John Edwards offers a new appraisal of Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII and his Spanish wife Catherine of Aragon. This biography paints a detailed portrait of Mary, exploring her European connections, ambitions, and religious policies. Edwards delves into Mary's life, tracing her origins and her struggles with her increasingly erratic father. He examines her notorious religious policies, some of which went horribly wrong from her point of view. The book concludes with a consideration of Mary's five-year reign and the frustrations that plagued her final years. Mary I's story is often reduced to dramatic episodes, but Edwards' deeply researched biography reveals a more complex figure. With full use of Continental archives, especially Spanish ones, he demonstrates how Mary's culture, Catholic faith, and politics were thoroughly Spanish.
