Description

Mary Cassatt at Work offers a fresh perspective on the life and art of Mary Cassatt. This study explores how her inventive technical practice and approach to modern subjects were deeply connected to her work as a woman artist in Parisian modernity. Cassatt's sensitive depictions of women and children often highlighted the labor involved in caregiving, embroidery, theatergoing, and reading. Her female subjects are actively engaged in their activities, revealing the importance of work in the lives of modern women. The book draws on previously unpublished letters, family correspondence, and technical examination of her works to understand Cassatt's professional identity within its social contexts. By examining Cassatt's style and techniques, this study sheds new light on the artist's understanding of her role as a professional. Mary Cassatt at Work is distributed for an upcoming exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, from May 18 to September 8, 2024, and will also be shown at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco from October 5, 2024, to January 26, 2025.
