Description
The story of Britain's presence in pre-Independence Senegal is one of intrigue and turmoil. Initially drawn to the region by the promise of gold trade, the British established a foothold on the coast of Senegal in 1765, making it the first British Crown colony in Africa. Britain's administration of Saint-Louis and Gorée was marked by periods of corruption, violence, and disease, which weakened its hold on the territory. Despite these challenges, governance improved during the early 19th century, and the slave trade was outlawed. However, this progress was short-lived, as tragedy struck when a French frigate carrying administrators and troops sank off the coast, leaving behind a legacy of horror. The book also explores how the borders of The Gambia were drawn and recounts the failed attempt by Britain to persuade Vichy forces in Senegal to declare for General de Gaulle during World War II.
