Description

Margam Depot is a photographic tribute to an important chapter in the story of South Wales' rail scene. Opened in 1964, the depot played a crucial role in servicing locomotives operating to and from Margam Knuckle Yard, one of the most highly mechanised depots in the UK at the time.

The depot's history is marked by significant changes, including the arrival of iconic freight trains such as the Port Talbot Docks to Llanwern Steel Works iron ore train. In 1976, this train was hailed as one of the heaviest running in the UK. Following the closure of Canton Traction Maintenance Depot in 2004, many staff transferred to Margam Servicing Depot, leading to an extension and the installation of a 2.5-ton overhead crane.

Here, Martin Bray presents a fascinating visual record of this period in rail history, offering a unique glimpse into the world of South Wales' railways during a time of significant change.
