Robert Brandom's Making It Explicit is an investigation into the nature of language and its role in distinguishing us as rational, logical creatures. The author revises traditional accounts of the relation between language and mind by proposing an alternate approach based on inference and discursive commitment.
The book sets out a theory that renders linguistic meaning in terms of use, explaining how semantic content can be conferred on expressions and attitudes caught up in social practices. At its center is a notion of discursive commitment, which holds that being able to talk - and so think - is a matter of mastering the practices that govern such commitments.
Brandom defines the distinctively expressive role of logical vocabulary and explores the inferential structure of the social practices within which things can be made conceptually explicit. This work offers an account of who we are, in terms of our capacity for language, logic, and rational thought.
