Description
Lyrics Alley is a powerful and moving story about an affluent Sudanese family struggling to come to terms with the changing world around them. In 1950s Sudan, the Abuzeid dynasty's trading firm holds immense power, but when Mahmoud Bey's son Nur suffers a debilitating accident, the family's future hangs in the balance. As British rule nears its end and modernizing influences clash with traditional values, tensions rise within the family. The two wives, Nabilah and Waheeba, represent different paths forward, while Nur must find his own way outside the cultural limits of his parents. This sweeping tale takes readers on a journey from Sudanese alleys to cosmopolitan Cairo and postcolonial Britain, exploring themes of desire, loss, despair, and reconciliation. Through its accomplished portrayal of Sudanese society at the time of independence, Lyrics Alley offers a nuanced and thought-provoking exploration of family, identity, and the complexities of cultural heritage.
