The cognitive-behaviourist approach has its roots in behavioural psychology, which was later challenged by linguist Noam Chomsky's argument that language is innate and cannot be explained solely through learning. In response, a new machine-like component was introduced to complement behaviour, leading to the development of behavioural-cognitivism. This book presents an opposing view, arguing that the unconscious does not fall into the category of "learning" but rather represents a mode of thought free from both learning and consciousness.
