Description
In 1930s Germany, a peculiar phenomenon emerged: the rise of the employees. With over three and a half million people occupying technical and administrative positions in commerce, banks, and transportation, this group of workers formed an interchangeable army of salaried individuals. Their low wages made their existence precarious, with little hope for independence. Siegfried Kracauer's study focuses on Berlin, where public life was being significantly altered by the needs of these employees. Through observations, conversations, and quotes gathered firsthand, Kracauer aims to provide a sociological diagnosis of this emerging workforce. This book offers a unique insight into the lives of Germany's growing middle class, shedding light on their struggles and the impact they had on society.
