Description
The Battle of Loos was part of a larger offensive by French and British forces in September 1915. The British First Army, led by General Haig, aimed to break through the German line at Loos, with support from other operations in Champagne and Vimy Ridge. A massive gas attack was planned to precede the assault, using chlorine gas to overcome German inadequate gas masks. However, the plan was not successful. Gas blew back into British trenches, causing over 2,000 casualties, before the assault itself took place. The attackers were met with fierce German resistance, particularly at Hill 70, where strong defenses repelled many waves of troops. The attack ultimately had to be called off after a few days, having cost 60,000 British casualties for virtually no gain. This tragic episode in World War I history is recorded in this book, which provides a detailed account of the events surrounding the Battle of Loos.
