Description

London Road is a powerful and thought-provoking verbatim-theatre musical that explores one of the darkest events in British history. In 2006, the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shaken to its core by the discovery of five women's bodies, and the community struggled to come to terms with the aftermath. The musical, developed by the National Theatre, London, is based on extensive interviews with the people of Ipswich and features a haunting score that responds to the melodic and rhythmic speech patterns captured in those recordings. This experimental work reveals the ways in which even the darkest experiences can foster a sense of mutual dependence among us. First performed at the National Theatre's Cottesloe auditorium in 2011, London Road won the Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical.
