Description

Little Beast by Julie Demers is a contemporary fairy tale about a young girl who finds herself at odds with her appearance. In 1944, an eleven-year-old girl lives in a small village in rural Quebec with her parents. Her mother is sad and her father has vanished after struggling to cope with his daughter's sudden growth of a full beard. The villagers, known as the Boots, are wary of the bearded little girl and her mother locks her indoors to keep her safe from their scrutiny. One night, the girl escapes into the wintry darkness, setting in motion a journey that challenges the traditional fairy tale narrative. Translated from French, Little Beast offers a fresh take on the modern fairy tale, exploring themes of identity and acceptance in a small community.
