Description

The Light Dragoon is a memoir by Private George Farmer, a soldier who served for 28 years in the army. After his discharge, Farmer brought his journal to George Robert Gleig, who rewrote the narrative and secured a pension for the veteran. The book recounts Farmer's experiences in the 11th Light Dragoons, which later became the 11th Hussars, and his time in Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and India. Farmer's service took him to various parts of Europe and Asia, where he witnessed the harsh realities of military life. He was taken prisoner in a cavalry skirmish and later became a groom for a German officer, Count Golstein. After many adventures, Farmer rejoined his regiment and fought in the Battle of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. He eventually returned to India, where he served for several years, and was discharged in 1836. This account is a unique and fascinating glimpse into the life of a soldier who saw action in some of the most significant conflicts of the early 19th century.
