Building on Thomas Hobbes' foundational work, Leviathan, this updated account examines the complex forces that shaped the nation-state during a period of significant global change. From territorial reconfigurations in North America to unification efforts in Europe and Asia, Maier reveals how modern states responded to war, technology, and ideology. The book also considers the impact of revolution and the rise of totalitarian regimes on state-building processes. By the late 1930s, however, the trajectory of history shifted towards war-glorifying states, leaving behind a diverse array of modern state variants. Maier concludes that despite these developments, modern statehood recreated itself in many ways, but ultimately had to adapt to the transformative influences of globalized capitalism.
