Description

Leon Battista Alberti: A Writer and Humanist This book offers a fresh perspective on Leon Battista Alberti, one of the most prolific writers of the Italian Renaissance. Often overshadowed by his architectural achievements, Alberti's literary works are now examined in detail for the first time in English. Martin McLaughlin, an expert on Alberti, explores all of his major works in Latin and the Italian vernacular, analyzing his vast knowledge of classical texts and culture. The book begins with a comparison of the facts about Alberti's life, as recorded in his autobiography, with the myth created by later scholars. It then delves into Alberti's literary development, tracing his evolution through various genres, including comedy, philosophical dialogues, humorous works, and treatises on painting and architecture. By examining Alberti's writings in depth, this book provides a nuanced understanding of his role as a writer and humanist, challenging the traditional view of him as a "Renaissance or Universal Man".
