Description
The Fariyaq: A Life Over Leg recounts the life and adventures of 'the Fariyaq,' alter ego of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, a pivotal figure in the intellectual and literary history of the modern Arab world. This work provides a wide-ranging discussion of the intellectual and social issues of its time, including freedom of conscience, women's rights, and the differences between contemporary European and Arabic literatures.
Written in a satirical style reminiscent of Sterne and Rabelais, Leg Over Leg is a unique and unclassifiable work that celebrates the genius and beauty of the classical Arabic language. The book was initially widely condemned for its attacks on authority and later editions were often abridged. This first English translation reproduces the original Arabic text, published under the author's supervision in 1855.
