Description

Layla and Majnun Nizami by Paul Smith is a translation and introduction to the epic poem that has had a profound impact on literature for over 800 years. This long masnavi poem tells the story of two lovers, Layla and Majnun, whose love is transformed into divine love through separation and longing. Paul Smith's version retains the beauty of the original poetry, while keeping to its traditional rhyme structure and mystical meaning. The book also includes a lengthy introduction on Nizami's life, as well as chapters on his other works. This collection provides valuable insights into the poet's life and literary legacy. A notable achievement in translation is Smith's work on Hafez's 'Divan', which has been praised for its accuracy and beauty.
