The Labyrinth of Knossos: Myth and Reality The legend of the labyrinth, a palace at Knossos where the Minotaur was confined, has captivated imagination for centuries. Despite numerous searches, the site remained elusive, with only a few clues surviving, such as a coin with a labyrinth design and small bronze age items. It wasn't until 1878 that a Cretan archeologist, Minos Kalokairinos, uncovered evidence of a Bronze Age palace, which would later be excavated by British archaeologist Arthur Evans. Evans's excavations, which took place between 1900 and 1931, revealed the remains of a huge palace that he believed must be the one of King Minos. He employed a team of experts to build up a picture of the Bronze Age community that had occupied the site, imagining a sophisticated, nature-loving people whose civilization had peaked and then disintegrated. The Ashmolean Museum's Evans Archive holds records of his finds, theories, and reconstructions, offering a unique insight into the history of the site. This book explores the myth and reality of the labyrinth at Knossos, shedding light on the archaeological discoveries and the interpretations of the site's history.
