Description
La vida no regalada tells the story of Spain's evolution from the late years of dictatorship to the transition period, through the life of its protagonist, Lorenzo Almendro. Born in a small town in Jaén, Lorenzo emigrates with his parents to Barcelona in the 1960s and settles in the Verdún neighbourhood.
Through Lorenzo's story, we experience the reality of life in a working-class barrio during this period, where people from all over Spain come together with families who speak Catalan. We see the discovery of the Catalan language, the rival gangs, the social housing projects, the parents' jobs in metalworking factories, the festive celebrations, and the early encounters with politics.
The book also explores Lorenzo's relationships with famous flamenco musicians, including Enrique Morente, Camarón, Tete Montoliu, Mayte Martín, and Miguel Poveda. This is a story of revolution and discovery, filled with music, ideals, and talent.
