Description
Something strange is happening in universities around the world. Students who claim to defend progressive ideas are booing politicians and speakers, preventing them from speaking out. More and more students are reluctant to express their opinions and engage in open discussion. The traditional "gymnasium of the mind" is now filled with people who shun debate and critical thinking.
According to experts Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, this situation can be attributed to three misguided ideas that have taken hold in many young minds. These include: "what doesn't kill you makes you weaker", "you should always trust your feelings", and "life is a struggle between good people and bad ones". While these notions may seem beneficial as they protect the individual and cater to their instincts, they actually contradict fundamental principles of psychology.
By embracing these false assumptions, we risk creating a culture of safety where no one wants to hear arguments that don't align with their views. This can hinder social, emotional, and intellectual development in young people, making it more difficult for them to navigate the complexities of adult life. As Jonathan Haidt puts it, "many young people born after 1995, who have arrived at universities since 2013, are fragile, hypersensitive, and manichean. They're not prepared to face life's conflicts or democracy's debates. They head straight for failure."
