Description

Dark Waters is a haunting and evocative monograph by Kristine Potter, exploring the American landscape as a complex cultural palimpsest. Through her seductive black-and-white images, Potter channels the dark, brooding atmosphere of Southern Gothic landscapes, capturing the essence of women often overlooked in popular narratives. Potter's photographs evoke the sense of foreboding and threat that women frequently experience in their daily lives, drawing on the imagery of "murder ballads" from the 19th and 20th centuries. The American South is portrayed as a landscape haunted by violence against women, with places like Murder Creek and Bloody Fork serving as potent symbols of this ongoing issue. Rebecca Bengal's accompanying short story adds depth to Potter's work, underscoring the anxiety and foreboding that pervade each image. A compelling combination of photography and prose, Dark Waters is a powerful exploration of the cultural landscape we inhabit today.
