Description
Stuart Bedford's life was inextricably linked to that of Benjamin Britten. His mother sang with the English Opera Group at the premieres of The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring, and the family remained close to Britten and Peter Pears for many years. As Bedford's own music career took off, he became Britten's trusted conductor, taking on responsibility for premiere performances as the composer's health began to decline. This included the US premiere of Death in Venice at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as other notable works such as Phaedra. Bedford went on to serve as Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival and record a series of Britten's music. Knowing Britten is a vivid account of Bedford's long association with both the composer and his music, offering insight into their complex and enduring relationship.
