Description
In 1978, Wisconsin's gray wolf population was thought to be extinct. Yet, rumors persisted of their return in the state's northwestern counties. Dick Thiel, then a college student with a passion for wolves, set out to uncover the truth.
This engrossing account follows Thiel as he tracks and protects the recovery of wolves in Wisconsin, conveying the wonder, frustrations, humor, and everyday hard work of field biologists. The book recounts his work monitoring wolves as they spread to central Wisconsin, the conflicts that arose with landowners and recreationalists, changes in state and federal policies, and the establishment of a wolf-hunting season in 2012.
Thiel's story provides a unique insight into the challenges faced by those working to conserve and protect wildlife. This new edition brings his account up to date, offering a fascinating glimpse into the complex world of wolf conservation in Wisconsin.
