Description
Kanaval by Leah Gordon is a unique and captivating collection of photographs that reveal the raw energy of Jacmel Carnival. Since 1995, Gordon has been documenting this vibrant event, capturing its intricate costumes, surreal narratives, and Vodou-charged performances.
These images strip away the commercialism and sanitised spectacle often associated with carnivals in the Americas, instead revealing a rich tapestry of folk memory, political satire, and personal revelation. The Madigra troupes of Jacmel, Haiti, enact and subvert myth and legend, creating an improvisational world that is both deeply rooted in tradition and fiercely resistant to conformity.
