Description
The Gibson Guitar factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was a place of mystery. In the mid-1940s, seventy women sat in four rows, their presence a challenge to conventional wisdom. The image haunted author John Thomas, who eventually set out to uncover the truth behind their presence. He discovered that Gibson employed a nearly all female workforce to build thousands of wartime guitars, each marked with a small, golden banner. Thomas's journey takes him from the birth of Orville Gibson to the founding of his namesake company, and finally to his untimely death. Along the way, he meets the women who worked at the factory, and time travels with them through the Great Depression and into World War II. He explores the abandoned factory, seeking to understand the craftsmanship of the Kalamazoo Gals. This book is a personal and historical account of the women who built Gibson's wartime guitars, and the story of the company's founder, Orville Gibson.
