Description
In 1926, Louis Goebel purchased five lots along Ventura Boulevard in Ventura County for $10 each to create a home for his seven African lions. The big predators quickly became a roadside attraction, drawing visitors from the surrounding area. As the Lion Farm gained regional fame, it attracted other notable figures, including Mabel Stark, a renowned woman tiger trainer, and Capt. Frank Phillips, who trained Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's famous Leo the Lion. The park maintained strong ties to Hollywood, hosting scenes for numerous films and television shows. Over time, the attraction became known as Jungleland. The park's popularity waned in the 1950s, and it eventually closed in 1969 after being sold at auction. The distinctive sounds of the Conejo Valley lion roars were silenced after four decades of operation.
