Description

Jonas Mekas: Interviews explores the life and work of a pioneering filmmaker and poet. Through eighteen interviews spanning nearly sixty years, Mekas shares his experiences as a refugee from Nazi- and Soviet-occupied Lithuania, his role in shaping American avant-garde cinema, and his vision for artistic expression. Mekas discusses his passion for filmmaking and writing, as well as the institutions he founded to promote independent cinema. His conversations with scholars, journalists, and other prominent artists offer insight into his uncompromising approach to art and his commitment to a liberated cinema. This collection preserves Mekas's voice, allowing future generations of artists and intellectuals to engage with his ideas and legacy.
