Description

The Book of Job presents a powerful drama of a just man who is aware of not deserving the misfortunes he suffers. This honest and sincere struggle against evil and the silence of God has intrigued many readers for centuries. In the early Christian generations, interest in the Book of Job was limited, but it gained momentum towards the end of the 4th century and into the 5th. The texts included in this volume are taken from systematic commentaries on the book of Job by various authors. These include works by Origen, Didymus the Blind, Julian the Persian, John Chrysostom, Hesychius of Jerusalem, and Olympiodorus in Greek, as well as Julian of Eclanum, Philip the Deacon, and Gregory the Great in Latin, and Ephrem of Nisibis and Isidore of Merv in Syriac. This collection offers a unique insight into how different thinkers have interpreted the Book of Job over time.
