Description

Canadian photographer Jeff Wall has been a pioneer in establishing photography as an autonomous medium since the late 1970s. His large-format photographs, often inspired by literature and art history, are characterized by painterly compositions that place contemporary photography within the broader canon of art history. Wall's body of work includes both documentary still life photos and "cinematographic" pictures, which can take months or even years to complete. The latter genre scenes evoke famous works by artists such as Hokusai, Manet, Kafka, and Ellison, among others. This comprehensive catalog brings together over 50 works from Wall's solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, including iconic slides in light boxes, black-and-white photographs, and color photographic prints. For the first time, this book presents Wall's most recent images, which reveal a wide range of references in terms of content and form. The publication enters into dialogue with Wall's earlier works, providing a unique insight into his oeuvre.
