Description
Published in 1618, James Shirley's poem Echo, or the Unfortunate Lovers marks the beginning of his literary career. Little is known about his life and work beyond this early publication.
Shirley's education at esteemed institutions such as Merchant Taylors' School, London, St John's College, Oxford, and St Catharine's College, Cambridge, laid the foundation for his future success. He went on to become a master of St Albans School after converting to the Catholic faith.
During his prolific writing career, Shirley produced thirty plays across various genres, including tragedies, comedies, and tragicomedies. His work was performed by Queen Henrietta's Men, an acting company he was engaged with as house dramatist, until the passing of the Puritan edict in 1642, which closed theatres.
