Description
James Joyce's Judaic Other explores how recent scholarship on ethnicity and race sheds light on the Jewish dimension in James Joyce's writing. By examining models of otherness from psychoanalytic, cultural studies, and Jewish cultural studies, this book argues that "the Jew" is a central figure in Joyce's work.
The author draws on the writings of prominent scholars such as Emmanuel Levinas, Sander Gilman, Gillian Rose, Homi Bhabha, and Max Nordau to illuminate Joyce's representations of Jews and Jewishness. The book combines these approaches to demonstrate how modern characterizations of otherness must be informed by historical representations of anti-Semitism.
Through a close analysis of Joyce's novel, the author develops a thematics and poetics of Jewishness that form a discourse and method for understanding his work. This study offers a fresh perspective on Joyce's writing and its significance in the context of modern debates about identity, nationality, and representation.
