American artist James Castle created extraordinary works from everyday images. Born in 1899 to a family of homesteaders in central Idaho, he developed an exceptional visual memory that allowed him to replicate and manipulate his surroundings through soot and saliva drawings. Castle's environment played a significant role in shaping his art. His parents' post office and store supplied early twentieth-century print culture, while he collected scrap paper and cardboard to create farm animals, furniture, and clothing. At a school for the deaf, Castle learned only basic language skills but used letters and words to create enigmatic text-based drawings. This book presents Castle's work as an expression of his remarkable ability to remember, manage, and improvise visual information.
