Description
Jamel Shabazz Albums presents a unique collection of portraits from one of New York's most influential photographers. Over four decades, Jamel Shabazz has captured the city's diverse communities through his lens, creating an archive of cultural shifts and struggles. This book showcases Shabazz's work from the 1970s to the 1990s, presented in small prints thematically grouped and sequenced within traditional family photo albums. The photographs are accompanied by essays that situate Shabazz's work within the broader history of photography, offering a nuanced understanding of his artistic vision. Through these portraits, Jamel Shabazz aims to represent individuals and communities with "honor and dignity", reflecting the street as a space for self-presentation. This collection provides a rare glimpse into Shabazz's archive, featuring many previously unseen images alongside some of his earliest works and photographs taken while working at Rikers Island.
