The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program Grade 3 is designed to support high-ability learners in developing their reading comprehension skills. This teacher's guide follows a field-tested method developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary, which moves students through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analysis of texts. Using skill ladders connected to short stories, poetry, essays, and nonfiction, students progress from lower-order concrete thinking skills to higher-order critical thinking skills. The program covers essential language arts standards, including sequencing, determining cause and effect, classifying, inferencing, and recognizing main ideas. This edition builds on the previous Level 1 edition, with new readings and ladders for student use. The guide provides teachers with an explanation of supplementary tasks that scaffold reading comprehension, as well as an overview of goals and objectives for implementing the Jacob's Ladder tasks.
