J.-K. Huysmans: A Life of Spiritual and Aesthetic Fulfillment
Ruth Antosh explores the life and work of J.-K. Huysmans, a major novelist and art critic from the late nineteenth-century French decadent movement. This critical biography sheds new light on Huysmans's correspondence, early fiction, art criticism, and surrealist novel En rade / Stranded, highlighting their significance in an era of profound social and artistic change. Huysmans is often seen as a forerunner of modernist letters, but his literary contributions extend far beyond his infamous novel À rebours / Against Nature. Antosh argues that Huysmans's life was a relentless pursuit of spiritual and aesthetic fulfillment, one that informs his entire body of work. By examining Huysmans's life and writing in depth, Antosh reveals the complexity and richness of this often-overlooked figure, offering a nuanced understanding of his place within the literary landscape of his time.Related Products
