Description
Ivan and Phoebe is a powerful exploration of family, tragedy, and independence set against the backdrop of Ukraine's tumultuous transition from Soviet rule to revolution. Through the intertwined stories of two characters, Ivan and Phoebe, Oksana Lutsyshyna sheds light on the complexities of post-Soviet society and the multigenerational trauma that can arise in the aftermath of social change. As the narrative jumps between urban centers like Kyiv and Lviv, and a small traditional hometown, it becomes clear that the notion of home and family is not always a source of peace and harmony. Instead, these spaces are often hotbeds of conflict, where the norms of marriage and home life are put to the test by the demands of free speech and protest. Through her vivid characters' voices, Lutsyshyna creates a nuanced portrayal of Ukraine's post-Soviet society, one that is marked by both social and political upheaval.
