Description

Isaac Newton and Natural Philosophy by Niccolò Guicciardini is a biography that explores the life and work of one of history's greatest scientists. Newton's interests extended far beyond his celebrated research in mathematics, optics, mechanics, and astronomy, encompassing alchemical, religious, and biblical studies. This fast-paced biography sets Newton within the context of the tumultuous period in which he lived, spanning the English Civil Wars, the Restoration, the Glorious Revolution, and the Hanoverian succession. Guicciardini draws on the latest Newtonian scholarship to provide a nuanced understanding of both this iconic figure and the great scientific revolution of the early modern period. By examining Newton's work and its significance, Guicciardini offers an accessible introduction to the pivotal book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which laid out his laws of universal gravitation and motion.
