Description

Into English offers a unique opportunity to experience the process and artistry of translating poetry. Editors Martha Collins and Kevin Prufer gathered twenty-five contributors, all translators and poets, who selected one poem in another language and three English translations, along with an essay about the challenges and rewards of translating it.

The anthology brings together original poems from across time and around the world, including works by Sappho, San Juan de la Cruz, Basho, Rilke, Akhmatova, García Lorca, Szymborska, Amichai, and Adonis. Over seventy translators are included, representing many languages such as Latin, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, and Haitian Creole.

This generous book offers a plenitude of poems, languages, eras, and translators, inviting readers to explore the joyous and argumentative struggle to give poems new life in English. With its unique format, Into English plunges the reader into a translation seminar, celebrating international poetry and translation.
