Description
Tom Sleigh's inventive prose explores the complexities of selfhood in poetry. In "Interview with a Ghost", he investigates the role of subjectivity and the limits of the first person in contemporary poetry. Sleigh examines the works of poets such as Anne Bradstreet, Sir Walter Raleigh, Robert Lowell, Thom Gunn, and Frank Bidart, alongside his own poems, to explore issues of realism, history, private life, disease, health, and the realm of the spirit. His essays take a range of forms, from imagined lectures to extended parables. Through this exploration, Sleigh establishes a new way of thinking and writing about poetry, one that suits the multiplicity of the self.
