Description
Dante Alighieri's Inferno is a spiritual quest that begins in a dark forest and traverses Hell's nine circles to reach the hopeful edge of purgatory. This allegorical story was also an indictment of religious hypocrisy and political corruption, making it a deeply moving and thought-provoking read. Translated by Mary Jo Bang, this version of the Inferno is lyrical, politically astute, and occasionally self-mocking, matching Dante's own liberal use of allusion and literary borrowing. With haunting illustrations by Henrik Drescher, Bang has created an idiomatically rich contemporary version that is accessible to readers familiar with Shakespeare, Dickinson, Freud, and other cultural references. A truly remarkable achievement, this Inferno is the most readable available in English, offering a fresh perspective on Dante's timeless masterpiece.
