Imagined Museums: Art and Modernity in Postcolonial Morocco by Katarzyna Pieprzak explores how art reflects and shapes modernity in Morocco. From 1912 to the present, the country's museums have played a significant role in its cultural development. Pieprzak examines the history of Moroccan museums, including both official state institutions and informal, popular spaces, to understand how they have been used to stage new narratives of art, memory, and modernity. She argues that the decay of colonial and national institutions of culture has led to a rethinking of the museum and the emergence of countermuseums. By considering the structure of the museum as both a modern institution and a national monument to modernity, Pieprzak sheds light on how Moroccan art has been used to imagine and articulate local claims to modernity, while also being challenged globally.
