Description
The Soviet city that was never built: six visions of Moscow from the great architects of modernist Russia. In 1917, Lenin moved the Russian capital back to Moscow, envisioning an ideal Soviet city with factories, theaters, and communal housing representing the strength of a new revolutionary society. This book explores how six bold architects in the 1920s and early 1930s envisioned Moscow's future. Featuring rarely seen material, Imagine Moscow portrays a vision of the Soviet capital that was never realized but still haunts the city today. The book focuses on six unbuilt architectural landmarks, each telling its own story about the city, including Ivan Leonidov's Lenin Institute and El Lissitzky's "Cloud Iron". Large-scale architectural plans, models, and drawings are paired with propaganda posters, textiles, and porcelain to contextualize Moscow's transformation as a city reborn. Edited by curator Eszter Steierhoffer, this book includes essays by writer Deyan Sudjic and architecture historians Richard Anderson and Jean-Louis Cohen.
