Description

The city of Most in north Bohemia tells its own story through the lives of its inhabitants. In this novel, the boundaries between past and present blur as the town's history emerges from the pollution and the swamp of its founding. A unique consciousness, often referred to as "I", weaves together the stories of those who live there, revealing a world where historical events are lived with typical Czech irony. Through lyrical prose sketches, the author explores the lives of individuals who mistrust history, yet find meaning in their experiences. The city's inhabitants take on archetypes, speaking factual and fictional truths alike. This blend of fact and fiction creates a post-modern narrative that is both noiseless and powerful. Published in 2006, I, City has been recognized for its unique storytelling style, which draws inspiration from the best traditions of Eastern European literature.
