Description

This collection of essays explores how the concept of humanity has been represented and constructed in American art from the colonial period to the present day.

Through a range of artworks, the authors examine how these representations have reflected, shaped, and modeled ideas of the human in American culture and politics. They consider how art has influenced our understanding of relationships between humans and other beings and things, and how different artistic constructions of humanity have evolved over time.

This book offers a nuanced history of a concept that is foundational to US civilization, while also proposing new ways of thinking about the human experience.
