Description
The New Testament Scholarship of Renaissance Humanists Jerry H. Bentley's study explores how humanists such as Lorenzo Valla, Spanish Complutensian scholars, and Erasmus of Rotterdam reoriented Western tradition in New Testament studies. This approach differed from the medieval practice of studying the New Testament only in Latin translation. Bentley examines how humanists employed linguistic, historical, and philological criteria to explain scriptures, rejecting preconceived theological interpretations. The study is based on an analysis of New Testament manuscripts and editions consulted by these scholars. This book provides insight into the methods and influence of Renaissance humanist scholarship on later New Testament studies.
