Description
Courtney Love's 1994 album Live Through This is an album about girlhood and motherhood; desire and disgust; self-destruction and survival. It is an album that changed lives, but its songwriter and musician's achievement has not been taken seriously two decades on. Live Through This arrived at a tumultuous point in the history of American music, three years after Nirvana's Nevermind broke open the punk underground. The album was part of a broader cultural shift, marked by the first issue of Riot Grrrl zine. Yet Hole stood outside this context, too famous for strict punk ethics and too explicitly feminist to be the world's biggest rock band. This album is one of few rock albums that have so intimately concerned themselves with female experience. Its impact on listeners has been profound, yet its songwriter's reputation remains inconsistent.
