Description

Vaughan Williams: Hodie (This Day) A cantata for soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB choir, and orchestra, Hodie is a compelling retelling of the Christmas story. Composed between 1953 and 1954, it was Vaughan Williams's final large-scale choral-orchestral work. The piece comprises sixteen movements, including 'narrations' of words from the Bible, chorals, and other forms for soloists and choir. The words are drawn from diverse sources, including sacred texts from the Vespers of Christmas Day and secular poetry by John Milton, Thomas Hardy, and Vaughan Williams's own wife Ursula.
