Description

The Historia Augusta, Volume III is a collection of biographical works that cover the lives of Roman emperors from Hadrian to Carinus. Written in various styles and attributed to different authors, this enigmatic work provides a unique insight into the second and third centuries of the Roman Empire. Despite its value as a historical source, the Historia Augusta is not without its limitations. Many details are anachronistic or unsupported, and some accounts contradict each other or better sources. Nevertheless, the work offers vivid characterizations of emperors both good and bad, making it an attractive read for those interested in biography. This revised edition by David Magie provides a fully current text, translation, and annotation that will be useful to scholars and casual readers alike.
